1.Rental per day: $19.50, let’s call this “Rd”
2.Charge per mile traveled: $0.26, let’s call this “Cm”
3.Total payment: $39.00; let’s call this “Pt”
4.Total miles traveled: “X”

So, the equation should be: Total charges ($39) minus the Charge per day (19.50) and the difference dived by the charge per mile.

That is: X = (Pt – Rd) / Cm

Therefore, X = (39.00 – 19.50) / 0.26

Which is: X = 19.50 / 0.26 = 75

So the driver put seventy-five miles in one day.

Cost for a day = $19.50
Amount to be paid for each mile = $0.26

Amount paid = $39
Amount spent on the miles travelled = $39 - $19.50
= $19.50
Let the number of miles be 'x'
0.26x = 19.50
x = 19.50/0.26
x = 75
He traveled 75 miles that day

The fuel economy is a red herring.
p=19.50+.26m=39
.26m=19.50
m=19.50=26=75
he drove 75 miles

x = miles traveled

0.26x + $19.50 = $39.00

Solve for x and x = 75 miles

The miles per gallon statement has nothing to do with the actual problem.

He pays 19.50 upfront. Let m be the number of miles he goes. He then spends .26 m on miles.
We know that 19.50 + .26m is the total, and this equals 39.

19.50 + .26m = 39
.26m = 19.5
m = 75

So the answer is 75 miles.

We check this to see .26 * 75 = 19.5, and 19.5 + 19.5 = 39.

since its 19.50 a day, you subtract 19.50 by 39 and get 19.50. since its .26 cents per gallon , you divide 19.50 by .26 and get 75.
therefore, he traveled 75 miles.

m=(39-19.50)/.26
m=19.50/.26
m=75
the 35 miles/ gallon is just there to confuse you.
