You could do the restore thing.
If I remember correctly you go to
start
settings
control panel
system
click on system restore tab

also try freeing up some unwanted disk space.
this is done by
click on
start
programs
accessories
system tools
disk cleanup or diskfragment

if thats not working than yes, you will need a CD..
Good luck and greetings from Utah.

You need the set up media to reinstall your Windows operating system. On some OEM systems, the set up files are located on a spare partition. Otherwise, you will need a CD.

You might be able to get a copy of the setup CD as long as you have your license sticker on the side of your computer. As long as you have an original license sticker, then someone could burn a copy of the OEM CD and you would still be using your license. There is nothing special about the CD itself that ties it to your license.

In the future, be sure to always keep your set up media in a safe place. A good quality CD book is a great investment to accompany your computer.

You can obtain a bootable version of Windows XP. I believe it is called "BartPE". You can run Xp right off your CD, and use the chkdsk /r /f command to repair your disk.
