Lets say the coach has no faith in his field goal kicker and sends in the punt team, and the punter splits the uprights. Do they get three points? Why not? Do the rules specify a specific formation the team must be in for a kick to result in a 3 point field goal?

Not as much formation, as the difference in the type of kick. If the punter kicked in from a place holder, then it would be a field goal. For it to be a field goal, it needs to be kicked from the holder, not from a drop in the air.

Not a specific formation, but a specific way in which the kicker drops the ball on the ground. If he holds it horizontally, it's a punt. If he holds it vertically and kicks the ball after ONE BOUNCE off the ground or upon first contact with the ground, it's considered a dropkick. If the legally dropkicked ball travels through the uprights and above the crossbar, it counts as a field goal worth three points.

That would be simply a touchback. The formation is different because during a punt, there's no one to hold the football. With a field goal, there is person that holds the football.

they do punt, and they could kick field goals if they have a good kicker but usually they just run the 2-point conversion.

To kick a three point goal, the ball must touch the turf before kicking. Years ago they allowed a "Dropkick" which was a punt which just touched the turf before making contact with the toe, but the accuracy was not as good.

no 3 points.......the ball must be kicked from the surface of the field.....

a drop kick however is legal. thats a place kick without a holder, and the ball is dropped on its point by the kicker and instantly kicked. if it goes through its 3 points
