When I was 23, back a long eon ago in the 80's when 18 was still legal drinking age, my husband, my sister and some friends went to party there for New Year's eve. My husband was wearing some very nice clothes, but stylish athletic shoes and athletic shoes were not accepted, but because there were so many of us (a party of 8) and we were all dressed up, they allowed us upstairs. They forgot to charge us the $25 per person downstairs. Then, my sister ordered a drink and chewed on the ice that turned out to be glass and all our drinks were free the rest of the evening. (No more ice, thank you) Anyway, there was a bar on the second level, not a gift shop. It was above the restaurant that still exists, but is now owned by landrys and not frontier enterprises (who owns Jims, hence the Jims on a stick knickname). I have not been there since they remodeled, but hear it is beautiful and of course much better structured as there had been some damage. I also remember a wind storm once breaking a plate of glass in the restaurant and several times people had to walk down the stairs because the electricity went out. Today they actually have MS stair walks to make money! It was a part of the World's Fair in 1973 originally along with many other buildings which either no longer exist or have been taken over by the government. Oh, yes, a gift shop existed along with the observation deck above the restaurant/nightclub and if you bought dinner or went to the bar, you could get to the observation deck for free. You used to be able to go outside the deck once also, but I believe a couple of people committed suicide and one person parachuted from the deck so changes were made. The gift shop is now on the ground floor. Can't wait to see the changes.

The Tower of the Americas was built in 1968 as part of the "68 World Expo".
From the base to the tip of the antenna (not the needle) it is about 72 stories tall. It is also the tallest free standing building in North America. (The weight is in the base).
As you sit at the windows, the interior will rotate slowly so you can see the city of San Antonio at different angles. It used to be a restaurant at the lower part (with good food). The next level was a gift shop. And the top level was an observation deck where you paid $.25 to view the city thru a telescope.
But with new remodling as a Landry's restaurant, I don't know what will happen or if the other decks will be allowed to remain.

The prices for the observation deck are below. A little history: Once a part of the World's fair, Frontier Enterprises purchased the establishment and then sold it to Landry's in the recent past. A fee has never been charged to go up the elevator to the restaurant. The restaurant is very nice and considered a leader in fine dining. In other words, it is a bit pricey even for the already pricey downtown area. There is also a club above the bar known as Bar 601. I went there prior to this name many years ago on New Year's Eve. It's one of the highlight time periods in my life.
