I am doing a paper on Soylent Green for a Pol. Sci. class. I am stuck and was hoping someone might be able to share what they think government and the movie have in common. ie: What is the role of government and it's impact on the average person in the film? Anything could help, Thanks!

As I remember, it's about a world that has become poisoned by pollution, over populated and underfed. It is a police state where information is forbidden and those sources are illegal. At least that world gave you the right to die in dignity but you weren't supposed to know you were about to become food. I'd have thought that Heston's politics would have different because of that movie. You might try seeing 1984 and Logan's Run as well. I still think we may well be headed in that direction if we don't do something about our own state of affairs very soon.

There is nothing about the government of that day in the movie. There is info about the giant corporation, Soylent Green, which controls the food supply, and there is obviously a police force, so presumably there is some kind of government, but there is no info in the film about it. (In Ron H's comment above, where he says euthanasia was mandatory at a certain age, I believe he must have been thinking about "Logan's Run." In Soylent Green, remember, there were a lot of old people, including Sol, who went to the center voluntarily. And I don't remember its being said that the centers were run by the government.)

Well I've not seen the movie in years but as I recall the government was in control of everything from the moment of your birth to your death and afterwords, they did have a use for the dead as you know. If your asking if there is relevance between the government in the movie and today's governments I think we're a longs ways off yet. China's or North Korea's governments would be about as close as you could get to the Soylent Green government as far as control of people lives go I believe. As for your exact question, the roll of government was to feed the people in the movie and to do this without the populace knowing what they were eating the government had to control everything, and I mean everything. I would have thought that you would have picked up on that watching the movie.

Today we are fast coming up on 50 years from the movie release. The Affordable Care Act is the launch of the rocket putting Soylent Green into play. But, we all must passed the Bill, before we read the Bill, signed into law, by just one portion of our democracy, or in plain English, had this jammed down our throats, like a cookie.

The government had solved the problem of overpopulation and a food shortage by requiring a mandatory euthanasia when you reached a certain age and then they recycled the dead bodies into food pellets, Soylent green.

The population was unaware the government was recycling people into food and the masses were ignorant and happy with the 'free' food

The 'subsidized' food in this movie predated 'welfare cheese' and proved the old saying 'there's no free lunch'

The main point I see is the government can control thought with enough police power and media. The masses generally do not care, as long as the status quo is maintained. The government was bound to provide food to keep the peace, but could not divulge the unthinkable: They were eating recycled human remains. Good choice for a paper, as it leads to two old questions. Does might make right? and: is the media the message or the message the media?

In the movie the Government has total control there is no real freedom. Also unless you are the ruling class you can never get ahead. I guess the Government is similar to what happens in Communist countries. Read 1984, and The handmaidens tale, they both have the same problem in different ways.
