Could posibly be the front axle ujoints are siezed

Well if the 4WD is engaged it is going to push back when you are turning which maybe the reason it seems "super tense"

This is called "steering torque" because torque is now being applied to the turning wheels as well when in 4wd.

theres no automatic 4WD on a blazer. you have to engage it.
