You might actually like it in Ocho Rios, Negril or Montego Bay(best bet), Montego Bay is the best choice as it is good mix of both locals as well as tourist. Its one of the biggest tourist spots but you can also get a feel of the island heritage as well. The other areas are mainly tourist so you probably wont get as good an experience.
Kingston the country capital isn't bad. Certainly not a place to be avoided. Its not the resort area but rather the home of its financial centers comparable to any city in the US. Thats why you might not like it as much as the areas I have just mentioned.

Its the third largest island in the Caribbean. Lots of rivers and great scenery. 14 parishes. Takes less than a day to travel from one end of the island and back. Negril has some of the best beaches miles upon miles. You can stay on the beach and be secluded.

The tallest mountain is Blue Mountain and they offer hikes to the summit. Jamaica produces world famous rum( J. Wray and Nephew and Appleton Estate) and coffee(Blue Mountain Coffee)

You have to go check it out. We own a guest house in Galina (20 min east of Ocho Rios) and love it (including our kids) there. There is ocean front lots around there that are beautiful. Check out the villa to stay while you are looking. www.majestic-waters.com. The new road is taking a while to build, but the drive around the island is getting much easier. The people are very friendly, but don't expect things getting done like they are in the US, everything is "Jamaica time"
