Being so liberal as to respect a variety of different opinions and not letting whether someone is conservative or liberal affect how they view the person's character.
OR
Being so conservative as to hate different or new ideas, to condemn everything that sounds different from the conservative standpoint, and to hate someone just because they are liberal and not conservative.

Don't u mean, which one of these is better:
Being so liberal that you're open minded to ANYTHING- even if it's morally wrong, evil, just for the sake of being open minded. So liberal that anything goes even if it hurts someone else (such as, an unborn child).
OR
Being so conservative that you actually think there are absolute rights and wrongs in this world. So conservative that you choose to live life in a traditional manner because you value and appreciate the traditional American way. So conservative that you feel people need to take responsibility for their actions.

I would say the second mind state is better.

If you pay attention, you will notice that it is mostly the self proclaimed Libs who are the most intollerant. It's the so called Libs who throw around terms like Nazi, racist, warmonger, idiot, moron etc to describe those who aren't "liberal"

Tolerance is better. Libs need to learn this.
