My mom raised me on her own my entire youth. She was a great mom. I love her to pieces! She died 2 years ago to cancer. I'm 20 years old. And I'm finally going to meet my father. I'm nervous and excited. Should I bring him something, as a gift? What do I say/talk about? Thanks!

If you decide to bring him anything (and I probably wouldn't the first meeting), I would bring him pictures of your growing up. I know you probably have a lot of questions, like what where you thinking, but get him to talk about himself, what he does for a living, his family (your step siblings), and what he likes to do for fun. This will start the foundation for further contract and put him more at ease and you too.

How exciting!

Oh, there's so much to talk about, isn't there? I'm sure you must have lots of questions. Your mom probably told you all about him, but now is your chance to ask him the same things. Where did he grow up? What is his family like (if you don't know them)? What does he do now? How did he and your mom meet? Where did he grow up? What was life like when he was your age? What was HE like when he was your age?

If you would like to get him a gift, that would be nice. I'm sure he'd like to see pictures of you when you were younger. That alone is a conversation filled with all sorts of memories that make for no quiet moments. :)

I wish I had done the same with my father when I was your age. I was too afraid to ask him anything but there was so much I wanted to know. It's too late now because he's gone. But I feel your excitement. I was nervous too once I learned he was my father. But you'll be okay. A gift or the photo album will be a nice ice breaker.

Good luck and enjoy!
