If you need to take a direct route, take interstate 80 all the way across.. and, buy a good road atlas so you can check your progress.
I dont know what the weather would be, but this time of your, you might hit snow at times.. take a blanket, snow chains, (they might be required on some roads in the winter), and some kind of emergency kit in case of a breakdown. ie.. check the weather on the radio as well during the trip.
If you have time, check the map and see what alternate routes you can take.. according to what you might like to see, etc.
I used to be a truck driver, so i hope this can help some.
And. Last but not least.. ENJOY the drive. This is a beautiful country.. take the time as you go to enjoy the sights.. even if its from the drivers side window.

Take I-90 to Chicago and I-80 to NYC. Don't stop a lot, or it will take you forever. Keep hauling even when you are tired - 16 hours a day - stopping at McDonalds and Wendys 3-4 times a day. And keep moving.
Bored and feel like pulling over? Buy a six pack and keep going, but don't get too drunk. Have fun.

Drive until you start to tire. Take needed breaks and nap. Listen to music that keeps you alert. If you drive through the Rockies make sure you got good tread on your tires. If you have a cell keep it charged.
