I just was wondering how many of you have experienced a real bad bout with depression being on the bc pill. I have been on low dose and medium dose pills and both of them have the same effect on me. I'm just a huge emotional mess (crying, moddy, tired all the time and just feeling like my whole world is caving in on me.. it was baaaad). I've been off of them for about a month now and let me tell you I feel 150 percent better. I guess the reason I ask is because my stupid husband doesn't really believe that bc can cause depression in females that badly. I told him how I was feeling and he just looked at me like I was lying about it. So how many of you have had terrible bouts with it?

I have a close girlfriend who had exactly the same problem as you.
She has tried numerous low dose pills but still suffers from bouts of severe depression and emotional issues with them - she was so bad that she actually had thoughts about suicide. She now refused to go on any pills as a result and uses alternative contraception. Good luck to you ....

I can totally relate to what you went through. I frst started taking bc two years ago, and my first one was OrthoEvra, the patch. That was the worse thing I ever did, with so many hormones in me it almost ruined my relationship. I was put on different ones, slowly lowering the dosage and now I'm back on a higher dose because I need more hormones but now have to control my temper/moods. Speaking in the moment, I am very stressed and depressed and trying to deal, and like you, my boyfriend blames it all on me which makes it worse. You feel like you are someone totally different than before the pills and it's like a catch 22 on what to do...be happy and possibly get pregnant, or be a witch and deal with the pills. Depression has always been a major side effect in birth control for me, not to mention loss of sex drive, tiredness, etc. You're not going crazy, tell your husband he is for not believing you! lol....Good luck to you.

Hey, that was all me. My ex didn't want me to take bc pills because of my moodiness. Little things, like his lying and not being honest about the future, would make me break down in tears. Hence, I went off of them so I could easily deny what a jerk he really was. I always felt a lot happier whenever I went off of them. But strangely, after we broke up, I started taking them again and felt okay. I think the pills make us more sensitive than normal. I was so depressed. I would just cry and cry, but I would also be really bitchey. So I take them now to keep me bitchey, since it doesn't matter anymore. Plus an added benefit now is that since I'm single it helps that they all kill my sex drive too. That hindered the relationship too with the lack of a libido. Oh well. On to my next loser.

Yes...it is true ....Birth control pills are hormones...Hormones in our systems cause some of the issues with PMS and also when women are pregnant. Sometimes it takes switching to another brand of b/c pills till you find one with the right mix. Some women find that they have to use another form of b/c altogether as they just cant take b/c pills at all. Hon it is not in your head...your issues were for real. You will find the right method that works for BOTH of you.

Well considering that birth control pills are 100% hormones, it is not unusual that they can cause emotional side effects. They did the same thing to me. Here is a link to some of the known side effects of different kinds of birth control. I hope that it helps.

lethargy or fatigue,
bloating,

Any type of hormones, BCP or whatever, can cause depression or a changed mood. Tell your husband to take it for a while and see how he feels. Men just don't get how hormones can affect your body.
