Santa Clause denotes feminine, as in Santa Monica, Santa Clarita, Santa Rosa, all feminine
Masculine it would be San Claus, as San Juan, or San Francisco
So someone obviously in the old New England days didn't understand latin or Spanish San Claus, = Masculine, Santa Claus.= Feminine
