You can do wine tours on your own. If you have a vehicle just drive around Sonoma and Napa. Wineries open to the public have signs welcoming you to drive on in. Just be careful not to sample so much that your driving is impaired.

You should get a rental car and drive yourself. The rental car company can give you a map to get you to the Napa Valley. When you get there all of the major wineries are right on the main street. Some wineries give tours, like Mondavi Winery which is one of the first you will come to. Some other will just have tasting from 3 or 4 wines. Many wineries now charge a nominal fee, like $4 or $5 which allows you to taste for a whole year if you come back.

Another option for touring which is really nice is to take the Wine Train. It has a parking lot but you need to reserve. It does lunch and dinner tours by train.
