I had the same thing and it turned out to be a poor ground. I had to ground mine clear back to the batteries.

Your dashboard lights are on the same fuse as the taillights. This is because you may never notice that your taillights are out.... so they put them on the same circut so that you can notice something wrong from the drivers seat. I would suggest checking the fuse panel first and replacing the burnt out fuse. If the fuse keeps popping then you need to find the short that is causing the drain on it.
