I have the IP address of someone who keeps harassing me on the internet. How can I find out if this IP address belongs to the person I think it is on the internet?

Just because you have an IP doesnt mean it belongs to his PC! It could very easily be a yahoo IP or an IP of his service provider! You can only trace a persons IP to their PC under special circumstances! If you got the IP from a messenger or an online mail account you will have to report the person at that site. If its a direct assault to your outlook express you can contact your ISP. Before ANYONE will bother to trace him, you will have to show proof that he is truly harrassing you!

As other people have already mentioned, an IP address identifies a computer and not a person. In addition, in all likelihood the IP address belongs to an ISP. That being said, you can trace an IP address easily using the website My IP Address and Location (http://www.ip-adress.com/). Simply enter the IP address in to the box and click [Enter]. The site will display the name of the ISP and the geographical location. There are other sites which can locate an IP address but, what makes ip-address different is it uses Google Maps to pinpoint the location.

Here are some other sites which can help:

You can find out what his Internet service provider is and other info by going here and typing in the ip address numbers.

Go to http://www.arin.net/whois/ and type in the numbers there.

His or her ip address should be something like numbers with . in between sorta like this

64.236.24.34 or something of that nature.

If they're truly harassing you, call the police. Realize that even then, ISPs can request a court order to release identity (and some won't do it at all).

Aside from that, the most you're going to be able to do is figure out who their ISP is and MAYBE where they are (though anonymizers make this harder every day).

an ip can change every time the modem is restarted so haveing that is useless, it could even cause the wrong person to be persicuted by the law.
