....but a lot of American companies build "American" cars in Mexico, but people still call them domestic or American.

My PT Cruiser is built in Mexico -- is that "American"? And, the last I checked, Daimler-Chrysler is a German company anyway!

I know that the Camaro / Firebird was built in Canada for a while, as were lot of other vehicles -- are those "foreign"??

I once lived in a GM town, and the local UAW refused to let my sister part in their parking lot because her foreign-built Buick (Opel) was a "foreign" car.

I don't think it matters any more. I'm betting that a huge percentage of GM's shareholders and bond holders are foreign, and just because their headquarters is in Michigan doesn't make their stuff "American" by virtue of car badge.

No, American companies build American cars. If the company isnt American, its just not an American car to me.

well if the cars are made *in* America, using american facilities and american productions etc.. then yes.. they are american cars...

if foreigners move to the states and have a kid.. the kid gets an american passport and is labelled as american... same difference.

i thought no, as although they use the american workforce most profits go to the owners- the japanese. but then again, the most english of cars (im english) Are Rolls Royce & minis (owned by germans) Jaguar and Aston Martins (owned by ford) etc etc, so i changed my mind and say if they are built in US, then they are american cars.

Sort of, but its not truely an American car unless it burns oil and breaks down every other week.
