This is a carefully researched novel told in the alternating voices of Pocahontas and John Smith. Smith describes the difficult voyage they had and the disagreements among the Virginia settlers as they try to build shelters, grow food, and get along with the native people. The settlers suffered many hardshiops, including sickness, hunger, bad leadership. There were jealousies among the people. They are not used to hard work, and have no experience in battle.

Pocahontas describes her people's fascination with the "Coatmen" who arrived in their "swan canoes" and their strange way of life. Her father the chief is very powerful, and his word is law among his people.

Often the same events are described from different perspectives, highlighting the unique way each culture looked at life and each other. In the end the Powhatans and John Smith make their peace in part due to the role Pocahontas played. The book finishes with several pages of notes that describe what actually happened to the historical Pocahontas, John Smith, and Jamestown.

These links will help you fill in details you may want to include. I hope this helps.

I never read the book, but I learned it through Honors U.S. History in early September. Pocahontas marries John Smith in order for the British would have "half" of thepeace. If Pocahantas wasn't married, then the Pohawatan would be destroyed, and the British would rage their fields, land, and resources perfect for trading in Great Britain by that time.
