Assuming you're talking about slaves in the Old South of the US, that would be prime field hands, the average price of which had risen to about $1800 by 1860. That's equivalent to about $40,000 in today's dollars.

By the way, by 1860 the total value of all the slaves in the South is estimated to have been about three billion dollars. That's in 1860 dollars; in today's dollars that would be about 65 billion dollars. That was equivalent to all of the investment in factories and railroads in the North. This is one of the main reasons the slaveholders, who made up only about three percent of he population of the South, were so opposed to abolishing slavery. It wasn't just the value of the slave labor they would lose, it was the value of the slaves themselves, who would cease to be assets on the balance sheet, like machinery in a factory, and become liabilities, like the workers in a factory.

The Slaves that cost the most money are the ones that become injured or ill and are no longer able to work. Since the Bible tells us to treat our slaves well we can not turn an unproductive slave out, but must continue caring for him or her just as we would a family member. Other expensive slaves are the ones that rob us and then escape.

Slaves were just like any other commodity. Rice, cattle, sugar fruits and vegetable and molasses. I even have a copy of an old slave poster of men women and children being sold at auction. Even George Washington himself had slaves that he inherited when he was 11 years old. "With this letter comes a ***** (Tom) which I beg the favor of you to sell in any of the islands you may go to, for whatever he will fetch, and bring me in return for him "One hhd of best molasses "One ditto of best rum "One barrel of lymes, if good and cheap "One pot of tamarinds, containing about 10 lbs. "Two small ditto of mixed sweetmeats, about 5 lbs. each. George Washington 1766 But to be fair...The Irish and Indians were slaves too and were treated worse than most African (Why?) Because they didnt last as long.....One African Slave was worth 2 or 3 of these guys.

That depends on the times and the country. If you are referring to the Roman Empire, the Southern US, etc. Your question is too broad...
