This noise can occur at any time of day, including the middle of the night. It can be so loud that it wakes everyone up. It never lasts longer than a few seconds then is gone. The frequency is anywhere from 0 to 3 times per day and the interval is unpredictable. It's difficult to locate the source but seems to come from a plumbing wall between the bathroom and the kitchen. Someone suggested that it is something 'looking for water'. The only things that match that in our home are the water softener on regenerate and the solenoid activated spray humidifier.

Water hammer is likely the cause but usually only happens when a water outlet turns on or off. If that is the case you need to do 2 things, 1 is strap the pipes down better in the walls floors etc, and 2 you can install vertical capped pipes in the water line that are filled with air. This is hard to explain but a vertical pipe that is caped at the top will hold an air pocket thus taking the sudden impulse created by the water hammer and thus cushion the impact. The longer pipes vibrate the looser the pipes become!

The more likely source is probably a chattering shut off valve. This is caused by the shut of valves seal vibrating because water is leaking through. Toilets are the most common cause because people don't always notice they are slowly leaking. If that is the case change the tanks valve. This is usually random and usually happens when the city water pressure rises or drops.

Hope this helps.

Is it the circulatory pump bearing rattling when the heat comes on ? Turn up the thermostat, and listen....If u hear the noise as soon as the thermostat clicks "ON", then that's it. It could also be some air trapped in the water meter periodically. Does the noise go away if you run the tap, if it does, it's air in the pipes. It may also be the relief valve is bad, and you're getting a "Water hammer". Does the toilet stock water tank leak slightly ? it could be the toilet valve squeezing shut after flushing, and recovering.

It's called water hammer and it's caused by air pockets in your pipes. Dealt with it years ago, but I don't recall now what eventually fixed it. Sorry!
