Hm. I don't know how it CAN'T positively effect one's life.

You can carry on conversations with others, read literature, understand the way the world works around you, have a more enjoyable time at the movies because you understand the references and symbollism, write with minimal grammatical and spelling mistakes...

English class doesn't just help with reading books, it helps with writing and speaking. Sometime as simple as incorrectly stating "Your welcome" in a letter can be fixed by English class. :)

If you are speaking in terms of an English grammar class, the answer is obvious. Even if you do not use/remember all the rules of the English language, you will be able to express yourself in an immeasurable way. The better you can express yourself, through spoken and written skills, the more likely you are to succeed.

If you are speaking in terms of an English Literature class...my goodness. Studying Literature does not only give you the ability to comprehend what you read, but it helps shape your world view. Comprehending Literature affords you the gift of being able to reason and comprehend nearly anything you choose. In a Literature class, you do not just study Literature. You are able to study the culture, history, geography, and scientific revolutions of any particular time or place. In essence, in a Literature class you study everything. The more you understand about the world man came from, the more you can understand about the world you live in today. History is cyclical, and Literature proves that fact. I have read so many different genres of literature during my time in school that it helped change the way I view the world. Literature can help you understand relationships and various types of people...there are so many positive effects that I could sit here for an hour listing just a few of them. But I won't. I have a book to read for my Novels class.

How you speak and present yourself to others is how others will judge you. If you have a broadened vocabulary, you can command a higher respect from others, which in turn may also help to get a better job in life. People who are illiterate, usually do not do well in the job market, nor do people who can not express themselves properly, such as "like duh, ya know, like, dude, like wow..."

There are two sayings you should remember:
1) "Readers lead, and leaders read"
2) "Do you want franchise, or french fries?"

If you should learn a foreign language, you will find that many English words are similar to those in other languages..

Even if you do not become an English major, your English classes WILL come in handy throughout your life... (no joke)

Have fun!

English and math are closely related in that language concepts and number concepts actually lay down new neural pathways in your brain. Language gives a rocket fuel kick to our brain's development. The more you play around with language and math, and the more you explore human behavior and the rest of the world with them, the more connections are actually physiologically created in your central nervous system. Think of English class as a form of Shaolin "qi" acquisition.

It will help you to speak and write more clearly so that you can get a decent job when you finish your education, instead of working at a fast food joint.
P.S. It's "positively affect your life"
