Why would the Angels sign a 3 year contract with Speier when they have one of the best bullpens in the American league? Shouldn't that payroll be used for a "big bat"??

Justin Speier was consider to be one of the most sought relief pitcher in the market, some envision him as a closer for some team in need. The market for a big time hitter is thin and most good slugger has stated that they have no desire to play in the west coast, which makes it harder for the Angels to acquire a big bat. The only way that the Angels could solve their woes is get a big time FA pitcher like Zito and trade a prospect like Ervin Santana to some other teams for players like Carl Crawford, Vernon Wells, or others. Basically, they can only do it via trade for now but G.M. Bill Stoneman has been reluctant to trade prospect in the past. The arrival of Speier (liekly the setup man for K-Rod) allows the Angels to strengthen their bullpen or package Scot Shields in any deal for a big bat.

The Angels signed Justin Speier due to the fact that before they can win a world series, for that matter a division again, they need pitching. For example, the Minnesota Twins have not had a "big bat" in their lineup since Kirby Puckett in 1995, but they have won 3 division titles in 4 years with pitching

this move now allows them to make a move for a big bat you have to keep an open mind and see the bigger picture they most likely plan on moving somebody from their bullpen in a package for a big bat they had to replace the person first

There pitching didn't do them any favors this year. Have to have more clutch performances down the stretch.

Also this isn't exactly the best year for free agency.
