Okay for one think about these problems, turn them into everyday questions like how many cherries each person gets or something like that. Now the problem, 3y - 4+ 5y - 7=, first you need to know what y is so figure that. Then multiply 5 times y. Then subtract 7 from that. That is the answer part of the equation but not the final answer. Now, multiply 3 times y. And subtract 4 from that answer. That is the answer. The amazing part ot that is I'm only in the 6th grade and I'm not a geek I'm actually really, REALLY ppular!!!!

3y-4 = 5y -7 move like terms to the same side

(when crossing = the term changes from positive to negative or vice versa)

7-4 = 5y-3y calculate (subtract or add)

3 = 2y then solve for y, divide by 2 on both sides

3/2 = 2y/2 the 2's cancel each other out for y

3/2 = y or 1.5

3y-4= 5y - 7
3y -5y = -7 + 4
-2y= -3
y= -3 / -2
y=3/2

or
- 4 + 7 = 5y - 3y
3 = 2y
y = 3/2

Let's combine terms. First, let's add 4 to each side. This will give us 3y = 5y - 3. Next, let's subtract 5y from each side. This will give us -2y = -3. We can drop the negatives since they are on both sides, giving us 2y = 3. Let's divide both sides by 2, giving us 3/2, or 1.5, or 1 1/2.

3y-4= 5y-7
collect like terms
3y-5y= -7+4
-2y = - 3
multiply thru by minus sign ( -)
2y = 3
y = 3/2
y= 11/2 or 1.5

It's very simple actually.

1) You want to put all the variables on one side
3y-5y= -7+4
2) Then just simplify
-2y= -3
3) Divide by 2 to get the variable by itself
y= -3/-2
4) The final solution is possitive because you're dividing a negative number by a negative number
y= 3/2

I hope you understand.

3y - 4 = 5y - 7
3y -4 + 4 = 5y -7 +4
3y -5y = 5y -3 -5y
(-2y = -3) / -2

y=3/2 or 1 1/2

Oh, and you could have done that yourself.
