Pluto was never really a planet. It was incorrectly classified as a planet and is actually in an area of the solar system outside of Neptune's orbit, which contains asteroids, comets, and icy bodies known as the Kuiper belt. Pluto has an eccentric orbit unlike the 8 planets and is considered a part of the Kuiper belt. Although scientist stripped the icy body of its name. I'm sure a lot of people will still refer to it as Pluto. Old habits die hard.

Pluto is not, and never was, a planet. The man who discovered Pluto is still famous, but he did not discover a planet. He discovered the first Kuiper Belt object. Kuiper Belt objects are beyond the orbit of Neptune.
