Won't he have enough government to juggle? He's going to be chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means (CWM). CWM controls tarrifs, taxes, welfare, foster care and adoptions, medicare, social security, and unemployment. Rangel wouldn't even have jurisdiction to control the mess he wants to indulge in. I'm frightened that he will be in charge of CWM. Who's making these decisions? Voters?

Charlie really thinks re-instituting the draft will deter our decisions to go to war, in that children of the senate and house could be drafted.

That's somewhat of a reach.

I don't want to chance filling our army with people who don't want to join. Not a good idea right now. Campus riots would be everywhere.

Can't answer your other questions right now, you did your research and are way ahead of me.

It stands a chance as do other bills......but I doubt it will pass. Charlie's got the wrong idea anyway. Such a bill won't guarentee anything. First how many in Congress or the Senate have children of draft age anyway. Second, members of Congress and Senators never read those bills all the way through anyway, so even it if does pass,. somebody will add something or delete something that will benefit the sons of Congress/Senators/the rich anyway.I hope it never gets pass the first draft.

This isn't Charles Rangels 1st attempt to reinstate the draft .
It was shot down in flames the first time .
Have no fear it wont pass and the Army hates the idea of baby sitting draftees.
But I do enjoy watching the Democratic party melt down OK I know I am a neo-con but I can resist saying " I told you so"

Oh BTW there are rich kids in the Army ,there called OFFICERS

This is just politicking to undermine support for the Iraq war. It's at least the 3rd time he's done it.

I think its a bad idea. The real military doesn't want the draft.

And I think forcing this issue could hurt dems chances in 2008.

The draft is necessary and a good thing. It will wake up an entire generation (actually, two) of young people who do not read a newspaper, watch the news, read a news magazine or listen to talk radio. Without the above you do not know anything but where the next line is to buy some electronic thing and zone out. The draft is a given and it is good.

It doesn't have to do with equaling the classes who serve. I've read that Rangel thinks, perhaps knows we will be in Iraq for a long time. He wants to have enough military for the long war. Mr. Liberal wants the war. Flip. Flop.

He's going to chair what?!

Let me begin by informing you that Congressman Rangel served in the Korean War, so he knows what it's like to be in combat/battle.
He wants to reinstate the draft because he doesn't feel that young people appreciate what the USA has to offer, and that a lot of young people take the freedom we have in this country for granted.
He also believes that reinstating the draft would make it less likely that the USA would go to war in the first place. And that if the draft were in effect nowadays, we would have troops in Iraq.

According to him, since people aren't jumping at the chance to go to Iraq, the next best thing, force them there. If the draft comes back, you can bet the divide in this country is gonna skyrocket.

Because he wants to equalize military service instead of making it voluntary. He wants to see rich kids in the military.

Too, bad he isn't interested in freedom or a strong military to defend it. Instead he wants a weak conscript army, to defend what? Certainly not freedom.
