you need a Centrino-based laptop.

this comes with built-in wi-fi and will allow you to retrieve email and surf internet on the move. also, it has power saving so the battery lasts longer (if you do less CPU-intensive stuff, the processor clock-speed drops and that saves power)

the internet is not a nice place. it's not your own bedroom. you need the latest and greatest protectware and you can't run those on a P3 well. if you run MS XP, together with the other stuff like antivirus, personal firewall, pop up blockers, spyware scanner, that's a lot of processing that a P3 won't do as well these days.

if you type manuscripts on notepad or wordpad, then maybe the P3 will still suffice. otherwise, please go Centrino. P4 is already outdated.

You might also want to consider Centrino dual core and have a powerful 3D graphics processor that will allow you to play games and watch DVD on your laptop.

As long as what you said in the question is all you plan on doing you should have no problem at all. I would in fact encourage you to go with the 3. The difference maker for the type of work you are doing is RAM which is easily upgradable. If you can upgrade your RAM and you should be pleased with the price you have paid and your performance. Obviously a Pentium 4 would be better but for the price a 3 will serve you just fine.

Pentium 3 is really too old. Why not consider instead a Celeron (from 1.6 to 2.8 GHz) that is a Pentium 4 just with less cache memory and, above all, more affordable than a Pentium 4.

Actually, you could probably get by with an older DOS type computer if you run Linux.

I STILL use DOS for some things, and IBM SystemV for others. I ALSO use several different versions of Linux, Win 3.1, 98SE, and XP on different computers.

The choice is yours and what you want to spend!!

you would be wonderful with twin middle imho, even if it extremely is extra suitable in case you get the i3. a consumer-friendly false impression in recent times is that because of the fact the hot i Cores have come out, that the twin middle is now a "sluggish" processor. it extremely is nevertheless as quickly as in the past, different than now there is something somewhat speedier to earnings it to. the twin middle itself is amazingly speedy and could healthy your purposes only wonderful, however the i3 is extremely surely worth the extra suitable dollar thinking the reality that it is not upgradeable like RAM, could you alter your ideas later. 4GB is a great volume of RAM to have on your usual desires, and could supplement any i3/i5/twin middle gadget good.

Don't even bother: intel is the worst company. Get a nice HP with AMD Turion 64 or something, just take my word of advice and DON'T GET AN INTEL PROCESSOR. You just have to trust me.
