My horse is in a small pasture with 20 other mares. Some are VERY mean to her. I cannot move her so get that through you. What can I do. (They bite her in the butt) I would also like to know if their is anything to put on her sores.

The juice in a can of pickled jalapenos mixed with Vaseline and smeared on her butt (not anywhere near her wounds, though, of course, or on her mane or tail) will make other horses stay away from her. Honestly? I mixed house cat urine in it once and THAT did the trick. She was a tiny little thing. But, smelling like a cat gave her GREAT power over the bullies. She actually became unbearably pushy with her new found "authority" and magic. : )

A little bipping on the butt is normal. If she's badly beaten, has gotten a bad injury, isn't allowed anywhere near the hay, etc that is not normal.

20 mares are a lot of horses for one small pasture. I personally would move her out of there. Sounds like the place is overcrowded and the horses aren't getting the right care. If the barn owner cared, he could have divided up the big pasture into 3-4 smaller pastures to break the herd into small groups.

Well since you wont or cant remove her from the pasture then she will just have to learn to stay out of the horses way or stick up for herself. In the long run you may end up w/alot more injuries then just some sores or a horse that shies away when your riding and another horse comes near. As for the sores, you can just make sure they are clean and put some furazone or some type of ointment. I dont know what the sores look like so I cant tell you what to use. Are they abrasions, puncture, swelling, heat, or just bare spots that the hair got bit off.

Horses have a hierarchy of sorts, and it looks like your mare is the low one. There is a salve you can put on her wounds: I used it on a mare that had gotten a lead tangled around one of her ankles. You should be able to find it at a feed and tack store.

Meanwhile, you may want to try to keep her isolated until you can move her. Is there a way to divide off a portion of the pasture? Many reputable stables have an area to quarantine new horses until they're sure the new ones aren't sick.

Good luck!

well there in it's self is the issue, small pasture and 21 horses. I would be a bit grumpy too!! she's on the bottom of the herd pecking order and there is nothing you can do. she has to do it. if you have just recently moved her into the pasture, it has upset the pecking order and it's normal for this to happen. don't take food into the pasture with you to catch her as this will only make things worse. you can try putting a heavy turnout rug on her and this will protect her from getting bit and kicked. the booboos she has already just clean up with a bit of betadine and water and put some furazone on them. good luck

Well, horses will be horses. If you can't mover her, then there isn't much you can do. A bit of iodine on her bites may help.

well there really isn't anything to do if you can't move her. you can put corona onintment (not the beer) on her sores. it heals them and prevents scares.
