Really, it depends on the pupil.

Homeschooling provides more of a one on one education. Special needs can be paid closer attention to or help in a particular area can be attended. However home schooled students tend to lack social experience and a large cultural variety of peers. The student also misses out on opportunities such as student government, sports, or clubs.

Public school provides a variety of subjects and usually teaches them fairly well, in my experience. However class sizes tend to be larger and sometimes struggling students are over looked. Students usually have opportunities to take classes based on interests and their grades. There is usually a variety of culture at public schools and a large student body with peers. Socially, public school students blossom.

Private school students usually receive excellent educations as the subjects tend to be slightly more advanced. Class sizes are usually smaller meaning struggling students get more help. Private schools tend to have better extracurriculars, because of tuition money. However, the student body may be limited and lacking in diversity. Often students who board at their school can receive a taste for college life and be more prepared than other students.

As a teacher, I have seen the problems that home schooled children have faced as they have to come to school at testing time. (They have to take state mandated standardized achievement tests annually and these cannot be administered by the parent.) These children typically are socially awkward, and do not score as high on many of the testing sub-areas as other students.

The parents of the home-schooled students often have a very difficult time finding suitable enrichment materials and activities to keep the curriculum stimulating and exciting. They have to provide a certain amount of field trips, etc., and a lot of parents are simply not up to the task, especially when it comes to teaching more complex subjects as math and science.

Private schools can be a great experience, if you can afford them. Tuition for these is exhorbitant, and the experience is not always wonderful, either. Since most of the students there are from upper class and weathy families, the students that come from middle class/scholarship families are often made to feel like outcasts, or shunned altogether. Private schools are not reality--they don't provide a real picture of what your child will experience in "the real world."

Public schools are not always perfect, but since your tax dollars fund them, your voice can make a difference. If you see that your child's education is not what you'd like it to be, join the PTA/PTO and be an advocate for your school and child. Raise money for new books and new equipment. It would be great if we didn't have to do fundraisers for new stuff, but that's just the reality. Good luck -- it's a tough decision.

I went to public. It sucked. I now know people whose children are in private schools. They are very bright, polite towards everyone, and overall have a much better picture of life in general. I also know people whose children are home schooled. Now that some are older, I would say about fifty percent of the kids regret not being able to go to school, and the other 50 liked it and turned out just fine. Hope this helps in your decision making. If it was me, and I had a second chance on where to send my kids, it would be private school. Good luck.

Homeschool is better. You really get to enjoy life with your family and your learning needs are more easily met. Do some research. There are many different ways of homeschooling.
Public schools aren't all bad but it's a lot easier to get into bad situations. You and your kids want to have to deal with the kind of stuff that goes on in those places.
