More than likely with that many miles on the car it will probably be a worn timing belt or chain. The teeth wear on the belts and slip just enough to cause it to backfire. It could also be some of the spark plug wire jumping fire. With this many miles though it is more than likely the first.

A clogged fuel filter or low fuel pressure could cause this. Change the fuel filter and check the fuel pressure. Also check the distributor cap for carbon tracking and plug wires for arching. It could be any number of senors and/or a plugged catalytic converter. Check the ignition timing to. This vehicle has no ignition points.

Do you truly mean backfire (engine explosion in the air intake) or muffler / tailpipe explosion?

Timing for one thing. Warn cam drive (gear or timing chain).

Are you accelerating or decelerating when it happens?
