Every night, review the concepts that were taught in class. Try using the Cornell Notes system. This will help you connect the details in your notes to the big ideas. The system requires you to take notes in class, and then come home every night to identify the main concepts and important ideas. See the link below for an example.

I am an engineering graduate just a year ago and likewise, I experienced such things you're experiencing now. To become an engineer, you need not memorize everything taught to you. To become an engineer, you need to be patient. For engineers are made not by memorizing but by constant practice. Practice what, if you may ask. Practice solving problems. The problems you will solve will depend on what type of engineer you want to become. They say practice makes perfect and if you practice solving a lot I believe you will never forget the lessons taught to you. For the practical applications you encounter will make appreciate the lessons better and these lessons will stay in you. Though some say that nobody is perfect so why practice, I believe that having much practice will make you avoid commiting error which will be very important in the real world setting.

I think you should develop an interest in what you study.
If you don't know what to study to be an engineer- there are people who can help you- thats not a problem.
But once you have the books just imagine what it might be like for you if you don't study: all the nasty jobs you will be doing
And if you do study- imagine yourself in a nice office facing a pleasant view, having a huge salary and so forth.

Another thing you might find useful is to make small goals and achieve them 1 by 1. Lets say your goal is to read 5 pages- wouldnt you feel satisfied when you're done?
Just keep going like this and at some point you'll be dome with a book, article, essay.

Break it down
Read the first couple of paragraphs, then write in your own words what the paragraphs were about. You don't have to rewrite the entire paragraph, you are just giving yourself a breif statement about what is in the paragraph.
Be sure to write out important points and vocabulary words - use your own language, the way you understand it.

Do that for the entire reading.

Now you have a study guide that you can understand and since you put it in your own words you should be able to remember it later.

If something is really long and complicated, after writing a couple of lines about the subject, make a note of where to find it in the text book so you can flip back for further reading when needed.

There are classes you can take called "Study skills" they have them in college and high schools. Take this class for sure. Also if you fall asleep when you read, get more rest. You can not study when you are tired.
If you do not learn well or get great grades, forget engeneering. For good students it can take 6 years to graduate college and it is very very hard. I suggest take something similar to engineering like Mathematics or Science. Then if you do well in the first two years with top grades you can switch or add on Engineering. Please dont do like my son did and take Engineering and then have to switch. You can get behind. You have to be 100% into school and homework and totally commited to major in engineering.
Keep in mind you may have a learning disability if you dont do well in school. Get evaluated. If you do, sometimes with help you can improve. Good Luck.
