I've not watched the show, since it's new season started and I was just wondering, what kind of creature or "thing" if you will, it turned out to be.

The smoke monster? Or the polar bear? They haven't really explained the smoke monster but they showed it slamming Ecko around. The polar bear is there because the neighboring island hosted a zoo at one point.

It was a polar bear. Some of the mysteries of the island are coming to light but there are so many more to come.
I don't know about you but this to me is one of the best if not the best television drama ever put on t.v.

The cloud monster could be nanobots(really small robots or insects) that has been messed around with by the others and escaped, like the polar bear. they messed around with dolphins,sharks and polar bears that we know of.

it was a polar bear. did you see the cages that sawyer and kate were locked in? those were polar bear cages (in one ep. the capture mentions the bears were caged there before they escaped).

If you are refering to the black cloud, they never said what it is. I personally think that it is the evil spirit of the island. This island is possessed in a lot of ways.
