Instead of looking at the survival of the homosexual line, look at it from the point of view of the heterosexual sibling. In your family, you have another adult who will not reproduce, but will contribute to the production. This means an extra adult protecting your children, giving them a better chance of survival. The clan benefits as this is a hedge against overpopulation.
If homosexuality is genetic, the frequency of the gene would oscillate in inverse proportion of the environment's ability to accomodate human population growth.

I honestly don't think homosexuality is a psychological or genetic defect.
The homosexual people I know are homosexual because of bad experiences as a child or as an adult in what should have been loving relationships.
We as human, loving beings navigate towards others who accept us for who and what we are. If a woman has repeated bad experiences with men or the other way around, they may find that the company of other women is where they feel more accepted. We are all different in our own way. Acceptance and love can overcome many things.
Things like racism, non-acceptance of others because of their size, shape, color, or sexual preference is wrong. This is truly a psychological defect that is self inflicted.
What really matters is how we as each person treat the people around us. We all deserve love and acceptance.

Their genetic information is also carried by brothers and sisters so if they increase the survival rate of their nieces and nephews the genetic line will continue and flourish.
The cause is due to something that happens to their mother during her pregnancy. That is inborn but not genetic.
Some do marry and have children, especially in the past when there was strong social pressure to do so.

Considering homosexual behavior is seen in many animals, and has been around in mankind since recorded time, then I would hazard a guess to say that its presence is not bad for the human population. Further - its persistence may have a benefit to survival that we haven't yet ascertained. From a purely evolutionary point of view, perhaps being the carrier for the homosexual gene (if there is one), while producing offspring who may not want to produce offspring themselves, may induce other non-obvious benefits, like intelligence, leadership, logic or some other traits (just as examples, these are not known benefits).
Are you getting my drift?
