The "knicks" come from the word "Knickerbockers". It was a term used for Dutch settlers of the southern end of the Island of Manhattan of New York City. In that area in the late 1800's one of the first proffesional baseball teams in the "New York Knickerbockers" was born. It is used for a term of recognition as the basketball teams name because they are in that area.
