(2/5) + (3/8) =
changing to lowest common denominator
8(2/5) + 5(3/8) =

(16/40) + (15/40) = (31/40) or .775

40 is your common denominator
2/5 x 8=16/40
3/8 x 5=15/40
16/40 + 15/40=31/40

if your adding it like this

(2 divided by 5) + (3 divided by 8) it equals .48

if you are adding fractions, it comes out to

16 15 31
---- + ------- = ------
40 40 40

as a mixed number, it would be this:
