A lobotomy was when they would quite literaly take a part of your brain out. As you stated, it involved drilling into the brain. It was thought that removing certain portions of the brain would reduce or cure certain behaviors. Obviously, it was a barbaric way of treating patients. Although, who knows, cultures hundreds of years from nwo will probably look at the way we do things as barbaric as well, it all depends on your reference and point of view.

A person with a lobotomy no longer has the ability to think or reason for themselves. Sounds like your friend is telling you to just let go and allow the relationship in question to rule your life. Not a very good idea in my opinion, but if you are "over thinking" your role in the relationship, maybe you are being told you should just relax and enjoy it more.

Check out a book called "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey.

There is also a movie by the same name, which stars Jack Nicholson. Towards the end of the book/movie, McMurphy (played by Nicholson) undergoes a labotomy. See: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/one_flew_over_the_cuckoos_nest/about.php

many years ago in mental institutions physicians would do it to "calm" patients. basically they would take an instrument that looked like an ice pick and insert it into the skull in a certain spot. and scramble it around. it of course would ruin that part of a person's brain. sometimes making them more normal and more functional but most of the time it would turn the person into a vegetable.

It is the removal of the front part of the brain, and is done to effect a personality change, in overly aggressive people. Not really recommended any more.
