A floor board like the Pod XT or Korg Toneworks gives you a much, much broader range of sounds than an amp's built in effects can give you. You get different kinds of distortion, chorus and flange effects, tons of different reverb sounds like studio plate reverb, vintage spring bag reverbs, and room reverbs.

If you only have one sound or two, an amp alone is a bit simpler to operate. But if you go for a wide variety of tones, you can't do without a pedal these days, even with a good amp.

Pedals are the way to go because it gives you more control. You don't want to go play with the amp during a performance, you just hit the pedals instead.

Turn the gain all the way up, and leave the treble on 2. For metal, set the base on 7, and for punk leave it on 5.
