Or should the word be allowed to be used by all, and not just by Blacks? Or should Blacks be able to say n*ggar, but no one else, and why would that be? Isn't one Black saying that repulsive to other Blacks ? Us whities have been told not to use it, and for a generation most of us haven't, then we are inudated with the word in music and movies. Something seems wrong here.

To B-Krak and others: How do you propose to teach your children and grandchildrenwatch right from wrong if they are exposed to conflicting ideas like this. I am perfectly able to censor what I watch and listen to! And frankly one word to an old man like me is the same as another, I could care less; however, the point remains that if this word is TRULY offensive to Blacks, then and whites are not allowed to use it, then it should be banned by blacks in music and video. Some like this double standard, I don't, and think it is unhealthy for the next generations.

Am I wrong, or hasn't the word been effectively banned from use in public and media forums by everyone EXCEPT blacks. Public official, newsbroasters, sports announcers have lost their jobs over the use of the word, or implying, even, a difference in races. A white employee would certainly lose his job at a major corporation for using the word, but a black person could use it in a board meeting. I'm ALL FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH,

This may or may not make sense. In normal conversation, I don't think it should ever be used. But, there is no such thing as banning a word.
I could also deal with it being banned in music. I'm pretty over hearing all these songs with the N word in it. Its getting pretty played out.
But, I don't think it would make much sense to ban it from the movie industry. Now, I don't think people should just run around saying it in movies pointlessly. But, imagine a movie set back in the 1800's. Would it really be historically accurate it no one said it? Or imagine a movie depicting the lives of a lot of innercity kids (and probably more), you are likely to hear it. So, to get an accurate performance, sometimes I think it is necessary.

No word should be banned. No matter what good intentions ( the road to hell is paved......) you try to paint this idea with, it's censorship & doesn't belong in a free society. I have every right to use the "N" word & you have every right to think that I'm an ignorant a**hole for using it. And for those out there who want to ban words , what part of "free speech" are you having trouble wrapping your minds around?

No. Because the ammendment protects even the most vile, racist, horrific speech imaginable. And for all it's connotations it is hard for someone to judge. If we banned it would we have to ban books and movies using the word? How about classic books? Are we just going to sweep away a past filled with hatred and pretend it enevr existed, or are we going to keep it as a reminder so that we do not make the same mistake?

This is called a "double standard."
Blame our federal government. Certain people, by law, get special treatment. The rest, do not. So they take ADVANTAGE of this special treatment and use it against every one else.

This will change when the "N" group is no longer a minority. Articles say in about 20-30 years from now. Then they will loose all protection and rights they now use and abuse.

Never - if this country banned people from saying anything it would be a direct violation of our first amendment, our freedom of speech, the most valuable and essential right we have as Americans.

why do you care? its just a word... don't you see that if we "whiteys" stop caring, it'll stop being said on its own- and even if it doesn't, if they bother you so much why do you even listen? you're free to turn the dial on the radio, or change the channel, or walk away (though that is kinda rude). why is it such a privelage to say that anyway? I don't get it.

you're missing the point. why would you teach your kid to care who's right or wrong in a (particularly stupid) racially charged argument versus the lesson of making the mature choice not to care about what the bigots are arguing about? why is race such an issue? because you're not fooling anybody- behind your words, you're really just angry that black people can do something you can't and get away with it. this has obviously sunk deep enough into your brain to be an issue of principle- and that's sad. I am really surprised when I find people who truely think this way anymore.

Yes. When people hear it, white or black, it carries a dirogatory connotation that resonate the African slaves' struggle during the American colonial period. Blacks or whites or any other race shouldn't say it. Blacks should definately not say it because of the unnecessary situation our ancestors were sold into. "The Boondocks" shouldn't use it.

I think references to people such as the N word and words that degrade women such as the W or H word should be banned. Nobody should use these vulgar words.

It should be banned. I don't understand why black people use the word amongst themselves, considering all of the negative connotations associated with it.

It is still used by blacks and whites, it embodies racism, if we say it isn't used anymore we deny racism still exists
