I think it is an absolute requirement by law for a county hospital emergency room to treat a patient who comes through the door. At least that is the case in Cook County (Chicago). I am not sure about private hospitals. I am not sure if they are required to treat anyone who comes through the ER doors. And as for Michigan, I am really not sure. I go to a free health clinic when I am ill because I have no insurance. It is funded by the county and by donations. All of the doctors that see patients see them on their own time. It is almost completely free. There is just a $5 fee for administrative purposes. You may want to look into a free health clinic before you pay those SUPER SUPER high ER bills at a hospital.

County Hospital will treat you with no insurance and most have access to money to pay bill. If you ask they can usually get you assistance with any prescriptions they give you. They can get you info about follow up care at free clinic or local doctors that are helping uninsured people. You will have to ask about these programs, I would say something at the er so they get paperwork going.

By law they have to treat you, but you'll be paying for thousands of dollars of treatment out of your own pocket.
You can find free clinics in major cities around the state. Look in your local phone book.

no hospital can legally turn you away because you don't have insurance. they will treat your symptoms and may transfer you to a state funded hospital after critical care has been administered. you will, of course receive a bill from the hospital and have to pay it.

hospitals aren't supposed to deny you care, most of them should even have programs for low income people,to either help with,or possibly even eliminate your bill..check into it..and even the hospital should be able to refer you to some free clinics in your area
