Laws used to be the equivalent of an enforced social contract between members of a society. This idea has been perverted into PUNITIVE and PENAL systems that we have today.
Before this system, groups tended to OSTRACIZE and SHUN people who did not conform to what their group considered proper behavior. You left that group to start your own, or joined another group with that accepts your behavior.
Now we try to alter an individual's thinking, we attempt REHABILITATION. But what if someone doesn't want to be rehabilitated?
I think that we should go back to a system that works: REMOVE THEM FROM SOCIETY. The Death Penalty is not the only way to remove people from society, but it sure cures RECIDIVISM..
