How did they come up with pet snakes? They are fun to play with but back in the old days people wouldn't want a snake unless it was for soup. So how did they come up with pet snakes?

How did they first come up with pet anything?
"Look, there's a fish. Let's stick it in a glass box and watch it swim up and down. That'll be fun."

Pet snakes probably were first used as protection to ward off intruders. And they lived with the people that owned them so they probably played a second role as pets. I am not sure if they are as loyal as dogs though!
