What are the symptoms? I am not breastfeeding but I have used the similac soy formula and now i am using the ailmentum. my baby is sooo cranky and gassy and spits up frequently. i stopped giveing her solid foods like peaches and prunes and bananas, she is old enought to have those..she is five months now...i just dont know if she has a milk allergy. i know something is wrong. i am taking her to the dr. on wed. but i need to know some of the symptoms of allergies in babies so i can sound like i know what i am talking about instead of an over anxious first time mom. can you be specific like what is the baby's body language like etc.??? thanks so much!!

even though she was on soy, it is still a milk based formula.

I cant say for sure about your baby but my baby was cow milk, soy protein allergic here were the following symptoms that I took to the gastro pediatric doctor when she was 4 1/2 months old. Good luck and if you have any questions please dont hesitate to contact me. Symptoms of the following began at approx 3 weeks of age she is currently 8 1/2 months old
and is doing well, pretty much has outgrown everything. she is on nestle good start formula for 6 weeks without any problems.
- Screaming with apparent pain, sometimes for long periods of time and multiple times a day
- Many times only relief came from walking with her, pressing her abdomen against your chest or carrying her on your forearm.
- Given Mylacon numerous times a day (have gone through 4 bottles in 15 weeks)---many times with very little apparent effect
- Be smiling and happy one minute and then suddenly scream with pain
- Crying and waking up many times a night--sometimes as many as nine times
- Most of the time the baby’s pain seemed to be in the late afternoon/evening
- Scrunches up her little legs when she screams with pain
- Takes medication for reflux
Feeding
- Have been breastfeeding since birth primarily up until 5 weeks except for 4 days when trialed similac with Iron no change and Isomil Soy : profuse vomiting
- She refuses to breastfeed except for night. Can't get her into a comfortable position, screams, arches back and claws at my skin
- Bottle feed her expressed breast milk with 2 TBS of Rice cereal per 4 ounces in every bottle since 5 weeks
- Very Difficult to bottle feed
- Have elimated most of dairy from my diet. avoid majority of gassy foods and spicy. Have 1 caffeine drink per day.
Void/BM
- She has had 8 nights of dry diaper. 4 consective nights in a row
- She often goes 5-7 days with no BM. then hard

It is often recommended to wait to start babies on solids when they are 6 months old because of an increased risk of allergies. Symptoms of a milk allergy can be loose stools, vomiting, refusing food, gagging, irritability and colic. A lot will depend on when the crankiness, gas, and spitting up began. If this is a recent thing for your daughter I would lean towards thinking it was a switch in her formula. If she has always been like this then a milk allergy could be the problem. Your doctor will probably want to perform some tests on your daughter to determine what is causing her symptoms. I have been a daycare provider in my home for 20 years and have only had one infant who developed a true milk allergy. She was a breast fed baby and about 5 months began not wanting to nurse and it took several months of formula switching and testing to determine her problem. She is 8 now and still highly allergic to any kind of dairy product even in the smallest amounts.

What everyone has said is possible. No one has mentioned a lactose intolerence. My son did the very same thing that your baby is doing. He was very cranky, spit up a lot, sometimes projectile vomiting, stomach ache, and gas. His formula was changed to enfamil prosobee, which is a soy based formula. At that time, there wasn't a lactose free formula. Now there is. The only way to know for sure if it is a true milk allergy is to have allergy tests done. If it is a true milk allergy that your baby has you must avoid giving her any dairy at all. If she is lactose intolerent then you can use the lactose free products. If it is a milk allergy then you will have to use strictly soymilk products which also means no cheese, ect. It is possible that she has a true milk allergy but I think it is a lactose intolerence. A lactose intolerence means that your baby is unable to digest the milk fat found in regular dairy products. My guess is that she has a lactose intolerence and not a milk allergy. Ask your doctor to allergy tests to test for a milk allergy, its the only way to know for sure. I see more kids with lactose intolerences than I do with an actual milk allergy. Good luck!

My baby boy was allergic to any formula with milk in in and also to soy formula. He did not really have any of the symptoms your baby has. He had chronic diarrhea for 14 days before we ruled out roto virus and everything else. He had 12+ messy diapers a day at 8 weeks old. Your baby could be allergic as well just not as severe. Just remember that babies spit up and they get gas. There little tummies get upset easy. My son is on Enfamil Nutramigen which has been a life saver for us. It sounds like you are doing everything right and dont worry about being an over anxious mom.. you are just looking our for your baby. Good Luck!

Not saying this is what it is but my daughter was thought to have that too and the GI dr's here at the University Of Kentucky Medical Center told me that a lot of Dr;s will say allergies but they are really having acid refluex. The common remedy for both is to change the formula to something that maybe a little softer on the tummy. Be very carefull and make sure that it is not refleux b/c it can cause babies to quit breathing in a worse case situtation. Not to scare you but something to look into.

I donot have an infant with milk allergy..but Zi do have a 23 year old daughter that is milk allergy..She was out on Isomil formula and it worked for her. I was raised in the south and my mom believed in alot of home remedys..one thing I did with mine when they had a tummy ache is to give them a little warm sweet tea in their bottle.it settled their tummy..try just doing the formula and get her adjusted to it..then start back adding approved foods by the Dr...a rule iof thumb for adding new foods is that if you start a new food today..do not add another new food for 5 days..that was if they react to it you will know what the problem ws,

My child did and she had everything you were describing spitting up fussyness gasssy etc. They put her on prosobee and she did he best on that but still not perfect. When she got older she was on soy milk for awhile and even now we still have to limit her milk intake in a day. She was tested at two and was positie for milk allergy. Dont stop giving her solid foods it wont help. My daughter would also projectile vomit formula. She was happy but showed obvious signs of milk problems

I was allergic to cows milk (back in the day). I was extremely fussy-my mom went through 17 babysitters in my first year of life-and would throw up after each "meal".
Once I was put on Isomil it pretty much cleared up for me. Now, if I have anything with a noticeable amount of milk (ice cream, cheeses, or drink chocolate milk) I still get hives, which itch like crazy, but the throwing up etc has passed.

It would not be a milk allergy because she is not on milk, she is on soy. It could just be acid tummy.
