Your vacuum cleaner belt is broken. Inside the vacuum there is a rubber belt that hooks onto the motor, they wear out and get broken periodically. Do not run your vacuum until you replace the belt or you will burn out the motor. You can buy a new belt at most grocery or hardware stores. To install the new belt you usually remove the plate on the bottom of your vacuum, then you should be able to see where the belt goes.

Change the belts. When the belts become worn they stretch out of shape. This causes them to slip over the rotating cyinder rather than rolling with it. That makes friction and the friction burns the belt.

We just bought an Oreck, you know how they advertise them and, it's a good vacuum, sucks good but, every time we use it, it smells rubber. I've checked everything on it. Short of sending it back, I don't know what to do.
My wife says it isn't that bad so, we're keeping it. I think it has something to do with the rubber pulley and the glides or pulleys the band rolls on. Maybe a tight fit ? I don't know, maybe the same with yours?

did you check the belt, it sounds it is rubbing and either broke or ready to break. If this is the problem replace the belt and the smell will go away.

Sounds like the belt is getting worn out and might soon break.
