What's the Best Video Game system from 2 generations ago?

What can I say? I'm cheap. I'm not running out and spending $600 on a video game system. In fact, I'm not even willing to spend $200 on a video game system.

So among systems like Playstation 1, Nintendo 64, Sega, etc., which do you think was the most fun video game system of all? I quickly bore of the games where you run and shoot a million monsters, and also the games where you karate chop one person after another.

I'm into startegy games, mysteries, air combat, tank combat, and games where I can play against a human opponent.

Suggestions on the system and specific game titles are welcome.

Used PS2s are going for ~$50-$60 here. Considering the library of games out there as "classics" selling for $20 or less. Also quite a few games will be coming out for it for a while.

N64s are going for less ($35-$45), but the games cost more ($10-$75 used) since many of the games are collectables now.

I would have to say the ps1. it had one of my fav rpgs of all times final fantasy 7 which takes about 150 hours of game play to beat it also has great racing like gran turismo 1&2 awesome stradegy and problem solving too. like resident evil, tactics ogre i have played through 2 ps1's and now have a ps2 which plays ps1 games also. they also have an abundant games at used stres and online at ebgames.com or gamecrazy.com most under 10 bucks so happy gaming

i'm a fan of the original nintendo. it has it all:

action/adventure games:
-super mario bros.
-zelda
-contra
-ninja gaiden

sports games:
-karate kid
-rc pro am
-punch out

puzzle games:
-tetris
-dr. mario

it has it all. and all you need to do to get it to work is blow in the system and the games and keep hitting reset.
