Remove the lid from the tank and look around for things that may
be either stuck or out of place. Probably the piece of rubber
which stops the water flow out of the tank either got knocked out
of place or is "stuck" not moving back down.
The water in the tank is clean, it normally flows from there
to the toilet, not the other way around, so go ahead and play
around with the moving parts to see how it's supposed to work.

I have had to repair those things many times.. How old is the toilet? How old is the apparatus on the inside of the toilet reservoir? Is the water running OVER the overflow pipe on the inside of the reservoir? If that is the case, then just adjust the float so the water does not get to the top of the overflow pipe.. If that is not the case, then it is tme to change the whole apparatus on the inside.. It is easy to do.. Turn off the water to the toilet.. Remove the reservoir by removing the large nut on the bottom of the reservoir.. Then remove the apparatus on the inside which has the rubber flapper and the chain.. Take it to Home Depot and tell them you want another like it(get the best one you can get), take it hope, install it.. put the reservoir back in place and fasten it down.. turn on the water and adjust the float as needed

there are four probable/possible causes
1) the flapper is stuck or defective.
open the tank and see if the flap is open, if the chain is hung up, unstick it so the flap will close. If the flapper is defective, replace it.
2) your float is stuck or waterlogged.
open the tank and see if the float is stuck or not floating.
If the float is stuck, unstick it, you may need to replace the assembly. If the float is waterlogged (or has a hole in it), buy a new one.
3) the valve in the filler is bad or dirty.
There is usually a screw on the top of the valve that adjusts the height of the float.
Sometimes, you can take the valve apart and remove the sand/debris that makes it not close, sometimes you have to replace the assemble.
4) The overflow tube is cracked or the valve/float is not adjusted properly and the excess water is going out through the overflow (which is how it is designed).

Adjust the float inside the tank so that the water level doesn't reach the overflow tube. This is usually a setscrew at the end of the float mechanism.

lift the lid off the back, look for the float (big black ball), then pull it up. look for the screw that adjusts when it shuts off the water, then turn it clockwise. Did that work?

replace the ballcock with a Fluidmaster plastic Toliet control valve. They are only about 6 bucks and so easy even a cave man could install one. Thanks Geico...lol
