Not all are, some just can't express their emotions and get a release from cutting. Don't let your friend scare you, just try to be there for them and look out for signs that they are suicidal. They say that a person who is going to kill themselves will have a sense of peace once they have a plan and may give away items and write letters to people.

Just because someone cuts themselves does not mean they are suicidal. However it also does mean they could be suicidal. This is a very individualized thing. For some people, cutting is enough to take away the mental pain and replace it with physical instead. Many times, cutting can be one of the signs of depression or other emotional or mental disorders. It can be a cry for help if there are many visible cuts or the person talks about his or her actions with others. Many cutters keep it to themselves and try to hide their actions. Those who hide it may be worse off than thos who do not merely because they do not have anyone they trust enough or feel so closed off from the world. Sometimes confronting the person will help them to seek help while other times I have seen it make them more secretive about their actions. Either way, it is important you keep an eye on them and remain friends with them. They probably need a good friend to be worried about them. I am done babbling my random thoughts now. I hope this helps you, even if only a little bit.

Alot of time when people cut themselves its a cry for help, she's not really suicidal, its just her way of dealing with her pain and so she can feel or not feel. But, if your friend doesn't get the help she needs she would end up bleeding to death. She's not trying to kill herself intentional, but, accidents do happen. She might be upset about something or things not going her way or to get attention. She's not suicidal, because she doesn't want to kill herself intentional that's what is called suicide, that's intentional. She is what you call a cutter and she wants to punish herself for something or someone else's behavior. Its not her fault and you give her the time, attention and the support she needs and try to talk to her about her problem and above all get her help before its to late. Good Luck!

lots of people say they do it for attention. some people do, they cant get attention any other way.

some people do it as a release. its the same concept as drinking during a stressful time and getting stoned to unwind. it gives you a rush of endorphins , and makes you feel good.

personally, ive cut once, and burned myself once. i tried cutting as a realese, but i didnt fel anything, so i stuck my thumb on the heated edge of an iron i was using. it hurt really bad, and it cleared my head just enough for me to realize i was an idiot.

some people who cut are genuinely suicidal.

if i were you, i would try to talk to them. if they wont listen to you, then tip your friend off to someone. just in case. you might not want to if you're their closest friend, ESPECIALLY if they havnt told someone else. where do they cut themselves? if its somewhere thats visible at any time, wrists when they raise their hand, hips and stomach when they stretch, feet if they wear sandles, the phrase it like this: "i noticed that (friends name) had some weird looking cuts. i think they might be cutting themselves." if the person you talk to knows the cutter is your friend, then ask them to say that someone had just noticed the cuts, NOT that they had told you and NOT that you were the one who tipped them off. tell them that you're afraid they'll do something drastic if they feel betrayed, because they truly well might.

dont let it go unnoticed. ive known cutters, i know cutters, i dabbled in it, its not a joke. my best friend was tipped off, not by me, and she got counseling. i think she's a lot better off for it.

No. Cutting your self without intent is merely an act of stupidity.

Its like when I broke my foot: I was standing on a chair getting
something out of a high cabinet for my wife. When I tried to get
down, the chair moved. I tried to save the chair. Act of stupidity.

People who cut themselves are crazy lunatics that need help.As far as I'm concerned they are a threat to themselves and to others around them.I would stay the hell away from your friend.Maybe some therapy could help your friend.

don't be scared, your friend is very sensitive and he\she is feeling a great deal of pain which they cant handle, so it turns into rage and anger, and because they very sensitive, they can not hurt the people who hurt them back, so they take out on them selves, it is not a big matter and they can cure easily, they would have to learn to express their anger in healthy ways, and try to speak up about their feeling, but i am afraid they can not this alone, they must see someone, give him\her the advice of seeking counseling, and they can get better ..

alot of people who cut themselves arent suicidal, but they are depressed and in pain. And as more pain is being inflicted upon them they cut themselves, as a sense of control. They can control that pain and it makes them feel like they have some control over pain in general.

They could be seeking attention, like to feel "something" and could have a compulsive disorder (like picking at a scab and not stopping, even when the person has ripped theri skin off).
