If there were never war, how would we recognize peace?

2006-11-20 12:26:35 · answer #1 · answered by ©2009 7 · 0 0

No. Violence can never be used to solve problems; these problems stem from differences of opinion, policy, belief and so on. These belong in the mental arena, using physical force is thus not possible, you just end up suppressing the problem or its cause rather than changing it and solving the problem. With suppression, the problem resurfaces some time or the other.

So... Violence could never achieve peace. And in any case, one war sets a precedent for the next.

Not so much the answer but the hatred of peace. Ultimately the natural consequence and outworking of the conduct of whole nations and peoples. There are few ' just ' wars.

Well if you see peace as a problem then war would certainly be the quickest way to disrupt and destroy it...

But if you really WANT peace, war is NOT the way to get it...

Yes, unfortunately, the world is ruled by the aggressive use of force. Without war, major disputes would not get settled. It would be nice if there were no Hitlers, Irans and Hezbollahs in the world, but sometimes one has to confront the forces that want you dead or want what you have.

In English class, a great many years ago, we had to state a truism, one sentence, no more.

Mine was "War is Peace"! This was during the height of the Viet Nam war, if one can call it that!

While the writer was not known by the rest of the class, we were allowed to answer our thoughts about the statements! I received zero votes of confidence. Everyone in the class thought the writer was a maniac! I was deeply saddened!

Years later, I read George Orwell's "1984" - and in the 1st chapter I read ...

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Who am I to argue with George???

Read the book!
