It is illegal to buy or sell turtles under 4" in the US by federal law, and it is illegal to capture wild turtles in most states (they usually fall under the non-game or fishing laws).

Once it is in your possession, however, there is not much that will happen to you.

Please note that softshells are tricky pets. You can learn about their care at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com.

It depends on the state you live in and the species of softshell. Chances are it is not illegal.

turtle hatchlings are illegal in the us. any turtle under 4" in diameter is illegal unless you have a special permit for them. since you have on already... you need to clean its cage DAILY they create large amounts of salmonella. which can make you and the turtle very sick.. try to keep its food habits as normal as possible.. gl

i caught a baby soft shell years ago when it was very small, kept it in a large aquarium, fed it live fish and raw chicken strips and other raw meat. It got to the size of a dinner plate so we had to turn it loose at the river. real cute pet, very intelligent
