If not, what is the difference between them?

Thank you for the responses. My last follow up is:

Can a bad timing belt cause pinging?

Timing belt is a rubber belt with teeth on it that keeps the cam and crank in time. If this breaks, on some engines new or old, it can damage the pistons, the valves, rocker arms (you get the idea). If the belt breaks, your car no longer runs.

Drive belts are made of rubber as well. Old people call these fan belts. Some have a single V shape that are called V belts, these are getting to be a rarity on most cars now. Newer cars have a serpentine belt which has several ridges on them. These drive the accesories...alternator, power steering pumo, A/C, air pump. If this belt breaks, you can lose steering assist, the alternator will cease to charge the battery...etc.

The water pump can be driven by the drive belt or the timing belt. If it is driven by the timing belt, you don't have to worry about over heating if the drive belt breaks. If the timing belt breaks, you don't have to worry about it because your car will no longer run.

As far as pinging, the only way that the timing belt can cause pinging is if the belt is so loose that it jumps time. In other words, I doubt that your pinging is caused by a timing belt.

Timing Belt Drive

No. The timing belt, as has been said, is used to control when the pistons move.

A drive belt, if you have one (like a Saab has a serpentine belt) is moved by the engine, and other accessories, like a water pump, are in turn moved by the drive belt, thus turning the pump. This is how the engine transfers movement to other stuff in the car that needs to be moved.

If the timing belt breaks, the engine can't run. On older car designs, if it broke, it could trash the engine. Nowadays, most car engines simply just stop when the timing belt breaks.

On the other hand, if the drive or serpentine belt breaks, the engine technically runs, just nothing else will (and once things like the water pump stop running long enough, the engine will join it). But the problem there is the failure to run the engine add-ons.

no ! there is a lot of difference between the 2.the timing belt runs on the crank and cam to keep it in time and the drive belt runs the stuff like alternator, power steering and water pump.

No, they are not.

ADDED: A timing belt, is what it implies, It controls the timing for the cam, and crankshaft. The drive belt, is for driving the accessories, like alternator, A/C, power steering, water pump, if there, and is also being driven by the crank.

timing belts drive the cam shaft which operates the valves. drive belts i do not know what they are unless there is some crazy car that is driven by a belt instead of a drive shaft.
