I've seen it happen several times in basketball.

They just give the ball back to the team that had the ball at the time at a spot on the sideline near the point the ball was when the whistle was blown.

It's definitely putting the team in a worse position in cases where there is a fast break in progress, but never seen a coach get bent out of shape over it.
