Play hockey because it takes guts and discipline, and those two qualities alone will take you far in the world.

Play hockey because it's a thrill, and fun because it's fast and dangerous and taking some calculated risks is good for everyone, male or female.

Play hockey because you will get closer to the people on your hockey team than any other team you'll be on in sports.

Play hockey because in life you need to stand your ground, and yield nothing, and go all out, and you'll learn all those things in one minute and fifteen seconds on the ice.

Play hockey because young women who participate in sports are shown in studies to have higher self esteem and better grades than those who do not.

Play hockey because everyone needs to have a sense of their own mortality and nothing like 60 minutes on the ice will do that for you.

Except maybe skydiving.

Play hockey because you already know how to skate and skating's half the battle.

Play hockey because it's a great litmus test for boys. The ones who are intimidated aren't worth a second glance. The ones who think it's cool are. The ones who come to your games are worth your phone number, and any guy who grabs his gear and joins you on the ice is one you should consider hanging onto.

Play hockey because you'll love it. Pretty much anyone who starts -- girls or boys -- winds up with hockey as their passion, and we all need a passion in life.

Play hockey because it will be different, and will open doors into new experiences for you. You will learn things that girls who play tamer sports will never know. Things like reall grit, real toughness, and that the bigger they are, the harder they really do fall.

Play hockey because if you ever choose a vocation like firefighting or the military, you cannot have a better starting point. You will have already learned important lessons and skills vital to those kinds of jobs.

(Maybe you better not tell your mom that last one, but it's true -- I've done firefighting and hockey both. ;) )

Play hockey because it's fun.

Good luck with your mom -- as I've said to others here, maybe make a deal with her that if you play you maintain a certain GPA. If you don't hold up your end of the bargain, you'll quit.

With due respect to Zelda, I don't think checking means "exciting." Women play a different, less physical game much of the time, simply because we have no reason to use our size when size isn't our best advantage. Women tend to be fast, technical players. They can also be aggressive, it all depends on the player. But I've never seen or participated in a 'boring' women's hockey game.

It doesn't suck at all. I'm sure a girls hockey team would welcome someone who can skate well. If you stay on a girls team, you're not allowed to check so it is safer than if you played on a boys team or your high school team (which would mostly have boys). Also, if you play on a "mixed" team, you'll end up having to change in the bathroom or the boys locker room (which is smelly).
The only problem I have with girls hockey is that generally (there are many exceptions) it can be boring, as females are not nearly as aggressive as males. I've seen female hockey players play defense well, and I've seen female wrestlers take on the boys and win. Some of them are attractive lovely irls, so it doesn't make you more manly to play hockey. I'm a parent of a former high school and grade school hockey player. We all love hockey. It's fun and good for you since you're actively using both your body and brain.

hockey is great game and u should play. U can play goalie, defence or foward. If u are playing hockey for the first time then play foward. Watch some hockey and learn about the sport its the most exciting game played on ice and im a hockey fan and its gotta be the most exciting game ever made. Benfits of playing hockey are meeting new people, learning something new, u can score goals, learn teamwork and there are some more but there are too many. I hope this helps, good luck

Only you can answer why you want to play.

It sucks because...

In a lot of areas ice time is hard to come by. You may have to practice at 5 AM and play games starting at 10 PM.

It sucks because of the bruises. I'd love to show you the FIVE I have on my right thigh right now.

It sucks for a female because it's a mans world and the coach may only give you five minutes of ice time. I assume you're talking high school hockey? Coaches want to win and play their best two lines exclusively.

It is an expensive hobby.

But go! You may be good at it. You'll never know sitting at home asking questions on Yahoo!

You sexist jerk! specific females ought to be allowed to play hockey. I play ice hockey for an ALL BOYS team! i'm the sole lady ON MY team! Its unlike we gained't take a success. I hate people such as you. Hockey isn't a guy's game. national Hockey League...is there an "M" in that? No, did not think of so. Is there everywhere in the rule of thumb e book that proclaims females won't be in a position to play? No. If there is, which there is not, instruct me.

Just tell your mom you wan tto play the greatest game on Earth. There's no reason for her to say no if you're such a great kid with good marks. Tell her it's good excercise. How else do you explain sprinting up and down the ice for the whole game?

what reasons do you need to play hockey? it's the coolest game on earth no matter what anyone sais. if you just tell your mum you would really like to join the team because it's the coolest, fastest ganme on earth, because it really builds up muscles, because they need more girls on the team and you feel it should be you,.. wouldn't that be amazing!!,... and beacuse playing the game really puts you in the ice hockey world like only watching a game never could, and off course you want to be inside that world because it's warm and cool and you create such a bond of friendship with people just talking about games you've played and stuff like that!!
what more do you want?
