what the heck is HD for? like explain plz

Blu-ray is a new type of "whizzy DVD", it is NOT just hi-def video, you can plonk any form of data that you wish - infact the PS3 uses it for storing video games, high-def video, music and so on.

Very high capacity means that it is usable for feature length Hi-def images but is also fine for standard resolution - but MANY hours worth of video.

Summary: A new form of very high density optical storage written & read with a blue DPSS laser


**Update** HD = high Definition but that is only PART of what a blu-ray disk can be used for.
